The Board

Maggie Dunn, CoChair
Maggie was a nurse before becoming a trade union official. As Senior National Officer, she became a national negotiator in the NHS and she also established UNISON’s Fitness to Practise unit, where she was the lead advocate. Maggie was lay Chair of the General Council for Massage Therapy until June 2008. She is a Chair of trustees for a national British charity and is also on the board of another international charity. She is also works as a mediator. Maggie is a strong people person who strives to achieve fairness and transparency in everything she does; she is enjoying the challenges of the CNHC.

Maggy Wallace, CoChair
Maggy has a substantial background in professional education, the health service and professional regulation in the UK and internationally. Her various roles of relevance to this work include: WHO Expert on professional regulation; Director of Standards at the UK Central Council for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting; lay Chair of the Council of Organisations Registering Homeopaths; Community Health Council member; and Non Executive Director (and Chair) of an NHS Foundation Trust. She has a passion for effective professional regulation in the public interest and is delighted to be part of this exciting initiative.

Angela Deacon
Angela is a solicitor who has been running her own private practice for 30 years. She served on the Law Society Council ( the governing body for Solicitors) for 11 years, dealing with the governance of the profession. She also sat on the Compliance Board of the Law Society for a number of years addressing  issues of regulation and professional.discipline  At present she chairs the  Architects Registration Board Regulatory hearings, which deal with the regulation of Architects.. She took an interest in complementary healthcare following her involvement with the Shakespeare Hospice and is currently Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Hospice.

Kay Dixon
Kay is an enthusiastic consumer champion.  Previously a member of the National Council of Postwatch, the statutory consumer body for postal services, she was for five years its regional chair for Greater London.  Currently she is a member of the Customer Impact Panel of the Association of British Insurers and was previously head of press and public affairs at the London Stock Exchange where she was a member of the Regulation Committee.  She has worked extensively in politics and public affairs.

Jenny Gordon
Jenny trained as a nurse at Great Ormond St. Hospitals for Sick Children and UCH, London. She has continued to work in a variety of healthcare roles in  the UK . Following completion of her first degree she completed her PhD in 2007. Her research focussed on the use of reflexology as an adjunct to care in the management of childhood idiopathic constipation. She now works for the RCN Institute in Oxford. She chairs the NICE Childhood Constipation Guideline Development Group and the British Society of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition – Associate Members. and is Independent Chair of The Bowen Forum.

Gillian Jordan
A practising physiotherapist for 40 years, Gillian continues to be involved with her professional body, the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (elected a Vice President in 2007)  Her broad knowledge of regulation is underpinned by a wealth of experience in training and education.  Her particular interests are inter-professional working and continuing professional development (CPD).  She has a long term interest in the complementary professions and for 3½ years chaired the Nutritional Therapy Council. She was a co-fund holder and co-author of a CPD programme for Complementary and Alternative Medicine Practitioners funded by the Department of Health.

Anne Sultoon
Anne has over 30 years experience of working in post-16 education from college lecturer to middle manager, to senior manager and independent consultant.  While most of Anne’s experience has been in further education, she has undertaken a number of assignments in work-based learning, higher education and with a local authority.  Her extensive experience in leadership and management has included programmes in a range of complementary therapies.  Anne has been a lay member of the General Council of Massage Therapy.  Committed to education and an interest in complementary therapies, she is very pleased to be part of the CNHC.

Dimitrios Varsamis
Dimitrios has worked in medical and environmental diagnostics research, before moving into healthcare assessment and statutory regulation. He works for the Healthcare Commission as an analyst, currently seconded to the Strategy department. He has previously served as, amongst other things, a Patient and Public Involvement in Health acute trust forum member, and as a Science and Engineering ambassador at schools.
